TRAVELLERS INVITED TO REDISCOVER LJUBLJANA THROUGH NEW CULINARY TOURS
Visit Ljubljana, the city’s official tourism website, is looking to reposition the Slovenian city as a gourmet destination by launching new culinary tours.
The tourism department is inviting travellers to discover eating outlets through its “Taste of Ljubljana” brand which it says is a great way to discover the diversity of the Slovenian cuisine and products.
Ljubljana visitors generally cannot get around town without visiting its central market. The structure, spreading in the city centre along the Ljubljanica River, was designed by renowned Slovenian architect, Jože Plečnik. Beside its architecture, the market is the centre for fresh seasonal gastronomic products from local farmers and craftsmen.
Ljubljana city suggests taking a tour around the market including a typical, fresh, locally produced breakfast in a nearby café or restaurant. The circuit starts every Saturday (more days are on offered in the summer season). The walk is done in the company of a friendly and knowledgeable guide, who will share the most interesting tales of the market and will reveal all of its secrets. The walk finishes then with a most rewarding breakfast. The tour includes also the making of bouquet of dried flowers and a small present.
The initiative is part of a thematic around Ljubljana as a culinary destination for travellers. The “Taste Ljubljana” brand marks popular local dishes that the chefs in selected restaurants prepare according to new cooking methods. The ingredients of these dishes are locally-sourced.
The “Taste of Ljubljana” brand is the right opportunity to discover a rather unknown cuisine. Slovenia’s capital has always been strongly influenced by a great diversity of ingredients and the Mediterranean, Alpine, and Pannonic cuisine. More recently, these influences have been joined by Balkan and other international cuisines.
The selected restaurants which choose to preserve the culinary tradition bear the Taste Ljubljana Mark and offer a large selection of traditional dishes.
