INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE APPROVES SURFING AND SKATEBOARDING FOR LA 2028 GAMES

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently approved a new set of sports events for the upcoming 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Those with a competent knowledge of Los Angeles culture will understand that surfing and skateboarding are two of the most popular pastimes in the Californian city. Good news then, that the International Olympic Committee recently approved the two sports as part of the 2028 Summer Games programme, along with a set of other sporting events.

The initial sports program for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles was recently approved. Among the approved events are aquatics, archery, basketball, equestrian, shooting, taekwondo, triathlon and wrestling. Activities yet to be approved include weightlifting and modern pentathol, with doubts over doping and other issues. That said, the IOC has provided paths for international sports federations to gain inclusion on the Olympic programme

“The LA28 Games have always been about bringing more freshness, youthful energy and creativity into the Olympic and Paralympic movement,” said LA28 Chairperson Casey Wasserman. “Los Angeles is a place unlike any other and it will be incredible to host surfing, skateboarding and climbing as iconic West Coast sports alongside Olympic fan favourites”.

The full LA28 sports program is expected to be finalised by the end of 2023.
