TOP TRENDS AND KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE MONACO YACHT SHOW 2022

The annual international superyacht event saw appearances from Prince Albert II and key players in the industry, with a variety of exhibitors and activities.

The 31st Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) invited key players from the industry to network and build partnerships. Over 110 superyachts were exhibited at the event, from nearly 600 exhibitors.

Sustainability Hub among the new additions to the Monaco Yacht Show

The event saw a range of new additions, including the introduction of an Adventure Area, which showcased luxury and off-road vehicles, as well as helicopters and innovative inventions.

This year’s event also introduced a unique Sustainability Hub. Since 2005, the show has made efforts to become eco aware, and the Sustainability Hub was intended to be an educational platform to raise awareness about environmental issues within the industry.

“The show’s new exhibition area is designed to showcase forms of technology that will bring concrete improvements to the world of yachting,” said Gaëlle Tallarida, managing director of the MYS, in an interview with Superyachts.com.

“We are making every effort to find, verify, promote, and reward sustainable solutions, whilst encouraging their use and bringing about much needed change.”

Lürssen yacht takes centre stage

Reportedly much of the focus at this year’s event was on the Lürssen 115m AHPO, a vessel built especially for a repeat Lürssen client.

“We have one yacht here, the 114m Ahpo. This is the third Lürssen of that owner. This is really the yacht that he dreamt up himself. I really hope you get to see it, it’s quite spectacular,” said Peter Lürssen, CEO.

“We will see very green yachts in the next 3-5 years. We aim to deliver one […] that can last 20 plus nights on the water that uses a fuel cell. However, we still have a long way to go. It is not the final result that we are aiming for, but we will get there.”

Speakers and experts offer insight into industry

There was a range of presentations at the annual event, with expert insights from Paris Baloumis, group marketing director of Oceanco, Charlie Birkett, co-founder and CEO of Y.CO, Aino-Leena Grapin, CEO of Winch Design and Ferruccio Rossi, president of Superyacht and general manager of SanLorenzo.

Charter brokers and charter managers also gave a showcase of how to deliver a successful charter service, from team breakdown to researching destinations. This featured appearances from Julie Bichon, head of charter management at Hill Robinson, Jamie Edmiston, CEO of Edmiston, Jacob Ewing, captain of M/Y Broadwater and Geordie Mackay-Lewis, co-founder and CEO of Pelorus.

A showcase on purchasing vessels was delivered by Michael Breman, sales director of Lürssen, Andrew Charlier, co-head and partner of HFW and Espen Oeino, naval architect at Espen Oeino International.

The annual show also saw a traditional visit from Albert II, Prince of Monaco. The prince boarded a selection of vessels, and met with exhibitors and owners.

Gulf Craft makes a big announcement

Reputed to be one of the world’s leading boat manufacturers, Gulf Craft arrived at the MYS to make a special announcement. The company, founded in 1982, has become one of the most influential shipyards in the world. Originally, Gulf Craft manufactured small fishing boats, before becoming a market leader in the industry, with five brands in their product portfolio.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the United Arab Emirates-based yacht manufacturer made an announcement that made headlines in the yachting world. The company unveiled a new Majesty 160 Superyacht, the company’s second largest superyacht, and a continuation of its Majesty 155 model.

“The Majesty 160 will be our second largest vessel and will be a class-apart in its segment,” said Mohammed Hussein AlShaali, Gulf Craft’s chairman, at the presentation.

The model will go into production this year, and was designed by Cristiano Gatto Design Studio in Italy, as well as Van Oossanen Dutch Naval Architects.
