Resilience, digitisation and sustainability are among the key themes for this year’s virtual ITB Berlin Convention. The event will run from 8 to 10 March, featuring leading speakers, presentations and themed exhibitor conferences.
The World’s Leading Travel Trade Show will be reimagined for 2022: becoming an entirely virtual event. This will be followed by a series of insightful events throughout the year.
The ITB Berlin Convention 2022 will focus on digital, sustainable and resilient solutions. The event will be broadcasted live from 10:00 to 18:00 from Messe Berlin studio. A 09:00 press conference will kickstart proceedings on March 8, with the entire programme livestreamed free of charge on ITB.com.
8 March: Future & Resilience Track
This year’s opening theme is Future & Resilience, centring on global travel and tourism, with market leaders and leading innovators providing examples of effective practises, valuable insights and strategic tactics.
’ITB Deep Dive: Global Tourism Demand’ will feature a presentation from Peter Kautz of Statista, who will showcase the shifting global tourism demand. ’Destination and Mobility Choice: Tectonic Shift or Back to Normal’ will feature discussions on the industry’s future from Dr. Eduardo Santander, executive director of the European Travel Commission (ETC), Dr. Klaus-Ulrich Sperl, CEO of DER Touristik DMC and member of the international board of DER Touristik Group, and Michelle Woodley, president of Preferred Hotels and Resorts.
9 March: eTravel Track
The eTravel track will investigate the digitisation of the tourism and travel industry, with experts offering insight into trends, prospects and practises.
Trivago CEO Axel Hefer will discuss distribution and marketing trends, while ‘The power of digital identities’ will feature input from NetSys CEO Nick Price, Suitepad founder and managing director Moritz von Petersdorff-Campen, and HOWZAT partner David Soskin, who will discuss the evolving hotel technology market.
’Technology & Travel: How technology is shaping the future of travel distribution and marketing’, will examine the impact of Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse, while other panels will investigate augmented reality, payment solutions and social media platforms like Tik Tok.
10 March: Responsible Tourism track
March 10 will centre around Responsible Tourism, with presentations on climate change, environmental protection, responsible tourism and sustainable solutions. Professor Dr. Johan Rockström, director of Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, will hold an insightful keynote speech.
Caroline Bremner, head of Travel and Tourism Research at Euromonitor International, will host ’From Carbon-Neutral Destinations to Regenerative Tourism: Boundaries and Implementation’, featuring Travalyst CEO Sally Davey, Travel Foundation CEO Jeremy Sampson and Jeremy Smith, co-founder of Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency.
’How to Walk the Talk. The Hospitality CEOs on Sustainability’ will examine the effects of sustainability on the hotel industry. Wolfgang M. Neumann, chair of the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, will open the discussion. ‘It’s the Journey that Matters: Challenges and Opportunities in Sustainable Mobility’, will centre on sustainability in the mobility sector, featuring Thomas Becker, vice president of Sustainability, Mobility, at BMW, and Fatima da Gloria de Sousa, director of Sustainability at Air France-KLM.
ITB Berlin Convention welcomes a new acting head
After 18 successful years, Prof. Dr. Roland Conrady is leaving his post as science head of the ITB Berlin Convention. Christina Freier, team leader at ITB Berlin, will be his interim successor. “For almost two decades Prof. Dr. Roland Conrady decisively influenced the ITB Berlin Convention, making it what it is today, namely the world’s largest think tank and one that is highly recognised”, said David Ruetz, head of ITB Berlin.
“It was a great honour to help develop the ITB Berlin Convention into the leading international format of its kind“, Prof. Dr. Roland Conrady added. “At the same time I am very happy to continue to support ITB Berlin in an advisory role.”
