The title of European Capital of Culture 2022 will be a fabulous opportunity for Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg’s second largest city, to gain international exposure… and attract visitors from Europe.
With a little over 35,000 inhabitants, Esch-sur-Alzette is located in the south of the Grand Duchy. For a long time, the city was only known as the centre of Luxembourg’s steel industry. The title of European Capital of Culture 2022 -shared with Kaunas in Lithuania and Novi Sad in Serbia- will translate into numerous activities which will not only involve Esch itself but also 10 other municipalities in Southern Luxembourg and another 8 districts in neighbouring France.
The main theme of the special year is “Remix”, which will translate into the implementation of over 160 projects across the region and some 2,000 events. The aim is the create something new, for a sustainable, social and successful future for the region.
Remix aims to combine local history, traditions, and the unique nature of the region with new influences from science, technologies, art and culture. Various thematics will run throughout the year, involving culture, nature, local identity (Remix Yourself), art and Europe.
Identity, environment and community among the main topics
The exhibition “Perspectives of Europe”, on display in the Möllerei, will deconstruct existing clichés and examine what defines Europeans and to what extent political, cultural or geographical definitions of “Europeanness” still make sense in a globalised world.
Thanks to a citizens’ initiative, Esch 2022 is developing a sustainable charter involving all municipalities located in Luxembourg and France as well as Luxembourg’s Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development. The charter defines a total of six objectives in view of shaping a sustainable future. It includes sustainable tourism; nutrition & gastronomy; local economy & exchange promoting local production; garbage reduction and recycling; mobility, accessibility and entertainment and transparent communication & marketing.
Esch 2022 aims to be a vibrant innovation hub, positioning the city and region as a future-oriented centre of knowledge and innovative and creative technologies.
