Building a greener future: How AOTE is transforming Albanian tourism

AOTE (Albanian Organisation of Tourism and Travel Enterprises) is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism practices that preserve natural landscapes, support local communities, and reduce the negative impacts of tourism on the environment. Founded in 2021, its mission is to foster responsible travel that respects both cultural heritage and the natural environment.

AOTE has four main focus areas: sustainable travel practices, community-based tourism, conservation through tourism and tourism education awareness. It advocates for eco-friendly travel choices, such as low-impact accommodations, transportation, and activities that minimise environmental degradation. It also works closely with local communities, helping them develop tourism initiatives that create jobs and preserve traditions, and ensures that tourism revenues directly benefit the people who host visitors. AOTE collaborates with national parks, protected areas, and conservation organisations to promote ecotourism as a means of funding environmental preservation and protecting endangered ecosystems. Through workshops, campaigns, and partnerships with tour operators, AOTE educates travellers and the tourism industry on the importance of minimising ecological footprints and supporting local conservation efforts.

AOTE offers the opportunity to be part of a movement that promotes responsible tourism in Albania and grants access to sustainable tourism training and networking opportunities.
