MALAGA TO INVEST IN NEW INITIATIVES TO BOOST CYCLE TOURISM INDUSTRY

A new initiative aiming to boost cycle tourism in Malaga has been launched by the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation.

The Royal Spanish Cycling Federation has launched a new New Bike Territory initiative in Malaga, aiming to boost cycle tourism in the Sierra Norte de Málaga region, which includes the municipalities Archidona, Cuevas Bajas, Cuevas de San Marcos, Villanueva de Algaidas, Villanueva del Rosario, Villanueva de Tapia and Villanueva del Trabuco. The intention is to make the region a reference point for sports tourism and leisure for both local and international visitors.

Malaga’s provincial council announced that it would be investing €200,000 in the new Bike Territory project. As part of the scheme, the council is introducing 800 kilometres of cycling routes, along with specialist services and infrastructure such as bikes to rent. The scheme will apparently be in cooperation with local businesses, such as hotels, restaurants and tourism companies.

“The Bike Territory will be a reference point between the environment and sports tourism, promoting the integrated development of the province of Malaga and the natural environment and the attractions of the municipalities of the Sierra Norte”, said Francisco Salado, president of the provincial council. Salado noted that inland tourism is being promoted through schemes such as this, as well as promoting natural and cultural destinations like the Caminito del Rey and the Green Corridor of the Guadalhorce.
