IHG TEAMS UP WITH TRADEWINDS CORP TO EXPAND LUXURY PORTFOLIO IN MALAYSIA
IHG Hotels & Resorts is joining forces with Tradewinds Corp to expand its luxury and lifestyle portfolio in Malaysia with the development of the InterContinental Penang Resort.
Opening in 2025, the company plans to revamp the former Penang Mutiara Beach Resort at Teluk Bahang and transform it into an IHG-branded luxury beach resort.
IHG’s Vice President, development, for South East Asia and Korea, Serena Lim, said: “We can’t wait to bring the world’s first and largest international luxury hotel brand to Malaysia’s second largest city with InterContinental Penang Resort.
“A city steeped in history and culture, Penang presents a strong leisure and corporate travel demand, buoyed by the recent border reopening and ending of travel restrictions.
“Tradewinds Corp is the perfect partner for us to introduce the InterContinental brand to Penang.”
With Teluk Bahang Fishing Village, Penang National Park and the Penang Tropical Spice Garden just a stone throw away, IHG hopes to create a haven for couples and families, whilst redefining luxury beach tourism for Penang.
The beach resort will feature 355 rooms and suites, as well as a private enclave of six villas for guests who are seeking a truly immersive experience in nature.
Visitors will also have access to a holistic wellness village, with 10 treatment villas, a yoga studio and relaxation pavilion.
This reflects the growing wellness travel trend, which is expected to surpass US$900 billion by 2022.
The hotel will also have a wide range of facilities, including three swimming pools and five restaurants and bars.
There will also be 1,000 square metres of meeting and event space, including a glass marquee and private lawn for garden weddings and special occasions.
Of course it also boasts the brand’s famous Club InterContinental Lounge, with stunning views of the Straits of Malacca.
