Latvia’s action-packed sporting agenda on display at ITB Berlin 2025

Sports tourism is on the rise worldwide, offering destinations a unique way of encouraging travellers year round. According to UN tourism, sports tourism generates approximately 10% of the world’s expenditure on tourism, and stands to see an estimated growth rate of 17.5% by 2030.

Latvia has a number of exciting athletic competitions on the agenda this year, promising to deliver unforgettable experiences and solidifying its status as a top destination for international sporting events.

The Rimi Riga Marathon, held from 17-18 May 2025,  is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Featuring a variety of races, including the marathon, half marathon, 10 km, 6 km, and the DPD Mile, the event offers runners of all levels the opportunity to participate. The traditional Kids’ Day activities also give young runners and their families a chance to join in the fun. Last year the marathon attracted 33,003 runners from a record 104 countries, including 60% more from abroad than the previous year.

Next up is the Olybet FIM Speedway Grand Prix of Latvia-Riga held from 1-2 August 2025 in Riga. Bringing together some of the top international riders competing for world championship points, races on the renowned Biķernieki circuit will offer spectators a thrilling experience, whether they are long-time racing fans or this is their first time at the track.  

Travellers can also look forward to EuroBasket 2025, running from 27 August to 14 September. The tournament features 24 teams divided into four groups, with the top four from each group advancing to the knockout rounds. Riga is one of the key host cities this year, welcoming the Group A matches during the group stage and the entire knockout phase, including the final, at the iconic Arēna Rīga. The tournament will showcase world-class basketball and welcome fans from across the globe.
