Fichtel Mountains reveals action packed 2023 calendar

If this horseshoe-shaped mountain range was not already on travellers’ radars, that will surely change in 2023, with the region presenting a wide range of engaging activities and anniversaries at ITB Berlin.

The Fichtel Mountains in Bavaria is already home to a long list of scenic hiking trails, and directors are hoping to earn the prestigious “Qualitätsregion Wanderbares Deutschland” certification from the German Hiking Association.

Trails like the Markgrafenrunde, which wraps around the mountainside village of Wülfersreuth, offers panoramic views of the beautiful Fichtelgebirge landscape. Another highlight is the Franconian Mountain Trail, which passes through the land of “white gold” (porcelain) amongst other sights and scenes.

The region’s revered walking trails are complimented by a comprehensive programme of engaging events taking place throughout 2023. The Bavarian-Czech “friendship weeks” is a unique initiative which will see a cross-border festival held with events, concerts and guided tours scheduled. The event intends to boost relations between the regions and foster long-term development.

Another important date in the region is the Luisenburg Festival, an annual celebration of stage productions at the oldest freelight natural stage in Germany. Visitors can expect productions such as “Frankenstein,” “Beauty and the Beast” and the opera “Rigoletto.”

There will be a historical anniversary related to the Fichtel Mountains. It is the 175th anniversary of the first steep railway section in Germany, where the iconic route is being honoured with an educational trail linking valley and mountain stations and impressive structures along the way. The revolutionary train track would go on to inspire railways like the Semmering, Brenner and Gotthard.
