WHICH CITY DESTINATIONS PERFORMED BEST IN 2022?
A new report from Euromonitor has put a spotlight on the city destinations that performed best for economic activity and tourism in 2022.
As the report notes, 2022 was a strong year of recovery for the travel and tourism industry, with many cities reaching pre-pandemic tourism levels. Euromonitor’s report judged cities based on six key criteria: economic and business performance, sustainability, health and safety, tourism performance, tourism infrastructure and tourism policy and attractiveness.
Paris was named the number one performing city destination for 2022, with the city’s Tourism Policy and Attractiveness, Tourism Infrastructure and Tourism Performance cited as key reasons as to why the French capital took the number one spot. European cities dominated the top 10 list, with Amsterdam at #3, Madrid at #4, Rome at #5, London at #6, Munich at #7, Berlin at #8 and Barcelona at #9. Italy led the way with six cities in the top 100 list, while Spain had five and Greece had four.
Asia was the second-highest performing region after Europe, with 26 cities featuring in the top 100 list, the highest being Singapore in 15th place, with Tokyo following in 20th place. The continent apparently improved most in the areas of Tourism Policy and Attractiveness and Health and Safety in 2022.
The highest performing city from the Americas was New York City, coming in at tenth place on the list. However, the Americas continent only saw 18 cities reach the top 100 list for 2022, despite domestic tourism continuing to grow through the year.
Dubai was listed as the highest-performing city destination from the Middle East and Asia, listed in second place after Paris, and the city’s revival of its MICE tourism segment was named a key reason as to why.
