CSR at ITB Berlin 2023: Transforming tourism by integrating human rights

Child protection, equity, economic empowerment and climate justice are key for the sustainable development of tourism

The Code ECPAT International, Roundtable Human Rights in Tourism, Studienkreis für Tourismus und Entwicklung, and Tourism Watch joined forces to offer their input and present at their shared ITB Berlin 2023 stand and at the ITB Berlin Convention.

ITB Berlin visitors were offered the chance to speak with the group at their stand in hall 4.1 or listen to the speak at various sessions of the ITB Berlin 2023 Convention last week. Anyone concerned about CSR and justice and equity in tourism could visit the four organisations ECPAT/The Code, Roundtable Human Rights in Tourism, Studienkreis für Tourismus und Entwicklung, and Tourism Watch at their joint stand in hall 4.1.

The aim was to exchange, gather more detailed information, learn about offers, and discuss different aspects of participation and human rights issues with the group in order to make an impact and help change tourism for the better.

In various sessions of ITB Berlin Convention, the organisations also presented a series of responsible tourism topics. On Tuesday March 7, the Studienkreis für Tourismus und Entwicklung (Students’ Circle for Tourism and Development) presented the traditional TO DO! Award and TO DO! Human Rights in Tourism Award Ceremony.

On Wednesday March 8, ECPAT spoke about how to protect children during a morning presentation titled “Safe places? ‒ Child Protection in tourist accommodations“. In the afternoon, Tourism Watch evoked ” A Guide Through the Label Jungle – Sustainability in Tourism” followed by a Roundtable Human Rights in Tourism presentation titled “Human Rights Are Your Business – Why Protection and Benefit Go Hand in Hand”. Finally on March 9, former head of Tourism Watch Antje Monshausen – now Head of Sustainability and Economic Development Desk at Brot fuer die Welt, the Protestant Agency for Diakonie and Development (EWDE) – delivered a keynote speech titled “Transforming Tourism: 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a guiding star for transformative action“.
