Zanzibar paves way towards sustainability with pioneering declaration
The island destination comes to ITB Berlin 2023 with a reinforced commitment to Sustainable Tourism
President of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, H.E. Dr Hussein A. Mwinyi has endorsed the state’s new Sustainable Tourism Declaration which sets out five areas of commitment for its first year.
The agreement aims to take action and actively collaborate for a tourism that benefits both the people of Zanzibar and its the natural and cultural heritage. Officially launched on February 9, the declaration was developed by a team spearheaded by Zanzibar’s Ministry of Tourism and Heritage through the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism.
“The Greener Zanzibar movement with the Zanzibar Sustainable Tourism Declaration is a milestone for our islands. It is very encouraging to see the momentum that has been created and how we are all coming together to tackle key challenges that we have jointly identified”, says Hafsa Mbamba, Executive Secretary (CEO) at the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism.
The Zanzibar Sustainable Tourism Declaration is an informal statement of intent and a rallying cry for Zanzibar’s tourism industry to take real strides towards sustainability in support of people, planet and prosperity. It recognises the effects that tourism is having on the natural and cultural environment of Zanzibar and the collective responsibility that each segment of society has in the process of ensuring that tourism brings the desired cultural, economic and environmental benefits.
Specifically, the declaration sets out five areas of commitment for its first year:
- Sustainable food from land and sea
- Sustainable waste management
- Space for nature and restoring ecosystems
- Supporting local Zanzibar culture, knowledge and expertise
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its operations
