ITB Berlin News spoke with Christoph Debus, CEO at DERTOUR Group, ahead of his live interview today with Dr Markus Heller, Managing Partner at Dr. Fried & Partner GmbH, where he will share his industry insights.
Can you tell us a little about your career path? How did you get to where you are today?
I studied Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration in Germany and France – fields that are not typically associated with a passion for the travel industry. However, I’ve been working in the travel sector for over 25 years now, with many years in C-level executive roles. It is a combination of my passion for travel, the satisfaction of supporting others, and the drive to lead teams and companies to new achievements every day that have brought me to where I am today. Having led leisure airlines, hotel divisions, tour operator businesses, and travel tech companies, I feel well prepared for my new, exciting role as CEO of DERTOUR Group – a fast-growing international tourism player.
Can you share something that has surprised you and that you’ve learned from in your career so far?
I was surprised to discover that the travel industry is full of unforeseen events, from significant business-affecting strikes to unexpected natural occurrences such as volcanic eruptions, bringing new challenges and opportunities every day. If you are seeking peace and quiet, you might want to consider a different industry.
