Finding happiness in Saxony, land of castles

Saxony could be described as the «Land of Castles”, with its hundreds of castles and palaces ready to welcome visitors.

Travellers dreaming of a fairy-tale castle should head to Moritzburg Castle. Set on an artificial island, this baroque jewel was originally built as a hunting lodge, and later became a royal pleasure palace under Augustus the Strong. Then there’s Pillnitz castle. This royal summer residence is nestled along the Elbe River and mixes classical and Chinese style architecture. And how about the Albrechtsburg? Its sleek gothic and  renaissance silhouette stands over Meissen.

Visitors can also stroll through the historic parks and gardens of Saxony’s palaces. Beside enjoying pristine nature, they also offer music, culinary delights and even open-air learning experiences.

One can experience the sweet life of a breezy summer afternoon with a picnic in the gardens of the baroque Rammenau Palace, the baroque palace of Delitzsch or the romantic Muskau Park.

TIPS FROM THE GARDEN MASTER
Garden masters share their tips with guests about gardening. They also help visitors understand the work it takes to maintain and preserve an historic site. In the Grosssedlitz Baroque Garden, beech hedges are trimmed along 4km, up to 5m in height. And visitors rave about the splendid hydrangeas in the park of Rammenau Palace.

THE MAGIC OF A ROMANTIC SUMMER NIGHT
In Altzella Monastery Park, sounds float through the air between ancient trees and the monastery’s ruins. Music accompanies the sunset while light installations transform old walls and landscapes.

MUSIC, GARDEN ART AND CULINARY DELIGHTS
A combination of music and garden art? Suggest the Wackerbarth Castle along the Saxon Wine Route. Summer concerts are organised there, combining exquisite music and the finest of gastronomy. And wines are directly produced at the castle’s estate.
