Costa Rica connects ITB Berlin visitors with nature

ADVERTORIAL

Mariana Garita, CST Coordinator at the Costa Rica Tourism Board talks about the vital role of nature in promoting Costa Rica’s tourism industry in an exclusive interview with ITB Berlin News

Can we have an overview of how Costa Rica’s tourism industry performed in 2022?
2022 has been a great year for us. We reached 74% of tourist arrivals compared to previous pre-pandemic years. We are very happy that our industry is finally recovering. We have a goal in 2023 to reach again the numbers that we had prior to the pandemic years. This is about 3 million visitors.

What makes Costa Rica such a special place to visit?
Right away, I would say that Costa Rica is blessed by Mother Nature as we have 6.5% of world’s biodiversity with some 95,000 species of flora and fauna. It is the perfect place to reconnect with nature, where you can explore volcanoes and beaches. At the same time, we are very small which makes travelling around easy. It will definitely help collecting memorable experience for anyone coming. And of course, traditions, our culture and food. Travellers can then combine an urban experience in San Jose and then go to the rainforest and to the beach. We are a perfect place for soft adventures and nature tourism.

Sustainability is paramount for Costa Rica. How will the country reach “net zero” emissions by 2050?
It is a great challenge, but all of our policies are working towards that goal. We are already among world leaders after practicing decades of decarbonising activities. We have a strong natural heritage and considering that we welcomed 2.3 million travellers last year, we need to protect this important asset.

How important is ITB Berlin?
We are at ITB Berlin with 30 companies to showcase Costa Rica experiences and activities. It is important to reunite. Being face to face effectively helps to get closer to people.
