The wild Vjosa River embodies Albania’s untamed beauty

Albania is strengthening its positioning as an adventure and nature destination

The country is a paradise for nature lovers, especially along the iconic Vjosa River with its pristine waters. Bikers and hikers can venture along less-known trails and enjoy spectacular landscapes.

Albania is rapidly gaining recognition for its unspoiled natural beauty and diverse landscapes, making it a prime destination for nature tourism. Among its many attractions the Vjosa River stands out as a symbol of the country’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty.

In March 2023, Albania declared the Vjosa River as Europe’s first Wild River National Park, marking an historic moment for European conservation efforts. Spanning approximately 270 kilometres, with 190 kilometres flowing through Albania, the Vjosa remains one of the last rivers free of dams in Europe. Its pristine waters meander through narrow canyons, creating braided river sections and forming meandering stretches that offer breathtaking vistas.

The park encompasses a vast area of 12,727 hectares, providing a sanctuary for over 1,000 species of wildlife. This includes 257 species of birds, 31 species of fish, 70 mammals, and 150 types of winged insects, 13 of which are listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Notably, the critically endangered Balkan lynx and the endangered Egyptian vulture find refuge within this protected area.

A paradise for nature lovers

The Vjosa Wild River National Park offers a plethora of activities for those eager to immerse themselves in nature.

Rafting: Adventure seekers can experience the thrill of navigating the river’s rapids, enjoying both the excitement and the surrounding scenic beauty.

Hiking and camping: Numerous trails wind through the park’s lush forests and along the riverbanks, providing opportunities for both novice and experienced hikers. Designated camping areas allow visitors to extend their stay under the stars.

Wildlife observation: Bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts can observe a diverse array of species in their natural habitats, making it a paradise for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Commitment to sustainable tourism

Albania’s dedication to preserving its natural landscapes is evident in initiatives like the Vjosa Wild River National Park Community Tourism Initiative. This programme emphasises the importance of community involvement in tourism, ensuring that local populations benefit from and actively participate in the sustainable development of their regions.

Albania’s rich tapestry of natural wonders, combined with its commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism, make it an ideal destination for nature lovers. Whether rafting down the wild Vjosa River, cycling through historical routes, hiking along mountainous trails, or just admiring unspoilt landscapes, visitors are sure to find experiences that inspire and rejuvenate. And they will always enjoy the sense of welcome and hospitality of Albanian people.

Hiking and biking fans will be especially pleased with two activities. For hikers, the High Scardus Trail presents a challenging yet rewarding experience. Awarded as the Best Tourism Project in Europe at the International Tourism Awards in 2022, the trail offers:
