CREATING A NEW DYNAMIC IN BERLIN’S LUXURY HOTEL SECTOR

With Berlin’s Regent hotel, located on the Gendarmenmarkt square, reopening this month, its management was not content to simply “carry on as usual”.

Intent on creating a new dynamic in the luxury market in the German capital, General Manager Claus Geißelmann has announced a number of original initiatives aimed at “going the extra mile” for guests wishing to experience the hotel, and the city, in a different way.

The first has a definite cultural twist. It turns out that where the Regent Berlin stands today, the famous wine merchants Lutter & Wegner had their wine house during the 18th and 19th century. To pay homage to this historic location at the Gendarmenmarkt, where poets and great thinkers came together, the hotel now offers a “Poet’s Haven”: a tranquil retreat with carefully selected literature, audio books and local delicacies.

According to Geißelmann, “It’s a feeling of coming home once you get comfortable on one of the plush sofas in the Lobby Lounge and choose from various books, including coffee table and audio books, iPads and Bose headphones. The kitchen team pampers guests with its own menu and a choice of food pairing delicacies, such as Read & Relax, Read & Experience or Read & Indulge.”

This package is part of the Regent Havens artfully designed spaces in the Lobby Lounge or suites with bespoke choices of tea, canapés, champagne & curated reading lists that help guests relax and enjoy intimate & inspiring moments.

“Poet’s Haven” is available daily between 6 pm and 10 pm.

The second initiative aims to be an unforgettable romantic experience as the sun disappears over the horizon. The short time between dawn and night-time darkness is known in Berlin as the “blue hour” (see photo top of page). During this time, the sky is lit with a dark blue hue which harmonises perfectly with the surroundings. It creates a very atmospheric ambience which transforms into impressive pictures.

The view from the top floors of the Regent over the Gendarmenmarkt during the blue hour is not only inspiring for professional photographers, but, combined with a champagne tasting, it is an unmissable highlight which suite guests at the hotel can book exclusively.

In either the Deluxe Gendarmen or Presidential Suite, guests take-up prime seats to enjoy the panoramic view over the French and German Cathedrals as well as the Concert Hall, take pictures, and listen to the sommelier’s knowledgeable concourse on the fine nuances between the different champagnes. Delicious food pairings round off the experience.

This package includes two hours in one of the two “prime” suites, with a view over the Gendarmenmarkt when booking an overnight stay, champagne tasting hosted by a private sommelier along with paired deluxe food pairing delicacies, candle-light and classical music.

And speaking of romantic, what could be more romantic in winter than a carriage ride through a frost dusted Berlin, cocooned in warm blankets, a picnic basket and a glass of delicious mulled wine in hand? With this “City Romance Experience” guests can add an inspiring and atmospheric outing to their stay at the Regent.

A hackney carriage will take the couple on a two-hour sightseeing tour of the historical as well as the new Berlin. A personal guide will accompany them to give insights and background information along the route. Starting point is the main entrance of the hotel, equipped with cosy blankets and a lovingly packed picnic backpack with seasonal treats including “Stollen” and hot mulled wine as well as sandwiches for when one craves something a little heartier.

“We are convinced these new packages will add a new dynamic not just to our hotel – but to the Berlin luxury market in general”, says Geißelmann, adding, “Many of our regular guests have been impatient for us to reopen, saying the feel ‘at home’ here. With these original packages, their next visit will be even more exhilarating.”

In 2018 the CondeNast Traveler listed the Regent Berlin as one of the top 14 hotels in Berlin. In 2020 the hotel has also been awarded by Forbes Travel Guide, earning the prestigious Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Award.
