INDONESIA EXPANDS SPORTS TOURISM OFFER

Indonesia’s Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry is putting the spotlight on sport as a boost to domestic tourism while borders remain closed.

Minister Sandiaga Uno has called on representatives of the local sports community to expand destinations for sports tourism in the country.

The Minister says he is keen to expedite the implementation of the tourism agenda in the next three months: “We, along with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, will facilitate it. We support sports tourism during the pandemic, but the implementation must be under the health protocols so that the people’s economy will run again.”

Mr Sandiaga said he has have received a commitment from the golf community, with three regions nominated to host sports events, including Bali and Jakarta.

He said golf tourism destinations should be expanded to other provinces, such as Yogyakarta and Riau Islands.

Mr Sandiaga suggested that triathlon competitions be carried out in five “super-priority” destinations – Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, Borobudur in Central Java, Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara, and Likupang in North Sulawesi.

The Minister proposed a similar idea for a potential marathon event that had been planned to be held in one region: “I ask it to be held also in five super-priority destinations. This is the challenge I present,” he said.
