GREEK ISLAND OF MYKONOS PREPARES FOR FIRST RUNNING FESTIVAL

Mykonos, the popular Greek island in the Aegean Sea, is preparing to host its first running festival.

The sports tourism event is organised by the Mykonos Municipality and the MEAS Triton Sports Federation, with the intention of being a multi-faceted experience with a programme of events.

“This new event will be a special experience that will give runners the opportunity to engage in quality tourism and also take part in a rich program of social, recreational and cultural events,” organisers have said in a statement.

The running festival will feature three races: the Half Marathon Mykonos Gold, the 10km Mykonos Run and the 2.5km Mykonos, Family Fun. There will also be a Kids Athletics programme, a concert, a beach party, as well as a business forum and a festival of traditional Greek products.

Organisers of the event have listed their strategic objectives, including the aim for the Mykonos Running Festival to be known worldwide as a sporting event. The uniqueness of the venue is also intended to help the event become renowned across the globe.

Organisers are also aiming for the event to centre around sports, as well as social activities, and programmes for tourists and business travellers. The event will help with social promotion of Mykonos and Greece, with business and tourism development in the region.

It is also intended to be a competition for all ages and fitness levels. Professional and non-professional athletes, amateur, methodical or travelling runners of different ages as well as runners with disabilities, will be able to participate. Another strategic objective is to offer an excellent service for both runners and participants. “Visitors and runners’ perceptions and feelings should be flawless with ideal sport and travel packages offered,” reads an official statement.
