NIGERIAN FOOD DESTINED TO POWER TOURISM AS A MAJOR NEW ASSET

At the World Gastronomy Day celebration in Nigeria, Minister of information and culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed called for improving the Nigerian food and cuisine standards.

During the event, organised by the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) in cooperation with the Chinese Embassy and Abuja Arts and Culture Department, Alhaji Lai Mohammed noted that cuisine should belong to Nigeria tourism strength.

He asked for concerted efforts in improving Nigerian food and cuisine production processes without compromising the ability of future generations to equally access quality sustainable food. This in accordance to government’s principles to reduce mass poverty and mitigate the effect of climate change.

Improving the way to produce and prepare food would also help place gastronomy as a major tourist pull-factor to enhance the country’s portfolio as a preferred tourist destination in Africa, according to the Director General of NIHOTOUR, Alhaji Nura Kangiwa. Kangiwa says gastronomy is in line with the government’s target of economic diversification and for a sustainable growth of the Nigerian tourism industry.

Mr Kangiwa highlighted that multiplier effect and social value chains of culinary tourism as a thriving industry will help eradicate poverty and aid in the improvement of rural infrastructure. NIHOTOUR will continue to provide training courses for the development of Nigerian unique tourism products and competitive destination management.
