HUNGARY EMERGES AS A WINE TOURISM DESTINATION FOLLOWING MAJOR MERLOT PRIZE
Over the decades, Hungary has become famous for both its red and white wines. The country has now confirmed its reputation as an exceptional wine destination by receiving the “Grand Gold Medal Revelation Red Wine” prize for the Cassiopeia Merlot 2015 produced by South Hungary’s Jammertal Wine Estate Villany.
Cassiopeia Merlot 2015 from Jammertal Wine Estate Villány received the highest score at the international “Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2021” (CMB) in the red wine category. It was awarded the prestigious Grand Gold Medal Revelation Red Wine prize. The CMB prestigious prize was supported by 300 judges who evaluated nearly 10,000 entries over nine days.
The CMB jury recognition is particularly important for Hungary as it was the first time that a Hungarian red wine has received this award in such a broad category.
The Jammertal Wine Estate has 85 hectares of vineyards in the Villany Wine Region, representing a production of 550-600,000 bottles a year. The region is already long established for wine amateurs.
The first official wine route was established at Villany-Siklós, where the official wine-growing area covers a total of 2,100 hectares. The listed historical cellars, which are among the greatest treasures of the landscape in this region include those of Palkonya, Villanykövesd, Villany, Nagyharsany, and Kisharsány.
