SPAIN LAUNCHES LOW-COST, HIGH-SPEED TRAIN SERVICE

Meet Spain’s newest innovation for travellers: Avlo, operated by state rail operator Renfe.

Along the high-speed northeast corridor, two Avlo trains are set to run non-stop between Madrid and Barcelona in the morning and evening, providing a quick, cheap alternative for travellers. The trip takes two and a half hours.

In the middle of the day, the train also stops in Zaragoza. In the evening, Avlo will make stops in Guadalajara, Calatayud, Zaragoza, Lleida, Tarragona and Girona, in addition to the Catalan capital.

Isaías Táboas, President of Renfe, said: “The launch was initially scheduled for April 2020, but had to be postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Avlo offers a range of additional services at an additional cost. It costs €8 to be able to cancel or change your ticket and also €8 to reserve a seat. Travellers can amend or cancel their ticket up to 30 minutes before departure.

The price includes hand luggage and a cabin suitcase (55x35x25cm), however, travellers have to pay €10 for a large piece of luggage.

The service will start on June 23, 2021 and timetables are valid until December 11, 2021.
